In recent years, safety and sustainability have become increasingly central to the development of our solutions, evolving from simple objectives into true strategic priorities.
It is within this context that the SSP600 was developed: an intelligent stabilization plate that introduces a new approach to machine safety, transforming a traditionally passive component into an active real-time monitoring system.
We spoke with Alfonso Sciandra, General Manager and Sales Director of RM®, to learn more about the origins of the idea, the development process, and the vision behind the project.
Who are you and what is your role?
My name is Alfonso Sciandra and I am the General Manager and Sales Director at RM®.
My role is a hybrid one, typical of the dynamic environment of SMEs, and involves two complementary responsibilities. On one side, I work alongside the other managers to guide the company’s strategy and growth; on the other, I strive to turn our vision and core values into concrete operational objectives.
In essence, my job is to transform strategy into action and bring it to life every day.
How did your journey with RM® begin?
I am proud to say that RM® was my very first professional experience. It is the company that introduced me to the world of construction machinery and job sites, a sector in which most of my career has developed.
I joined in 1995 as a sales representative for the Triveneto area before moving into the role of Product Sales Specialist.
In 2001, I decided to challenge myself by joining larger multinational companies with a stronger international focus. I therefore left the company for a period of time and, after more than twenty years, returned to where it all began, bringing back the experience I had gained in international environments.
How did the idea for the SSP600 support plate come about?
It may sound unusual, but the idea came to me during a simple moment of relaxation.
I was waiting for a piadina during my lunch break when I noticed those paging systems used in restaurants to notify customers when their order is ready. What struck me was how such a simple alert system could connect the person waiting with the person preparing the food.
That observation led me to reflect on how connected everything is today and how, even in our industry, there is a real-time connection between people and machines.
In the world of construction equipment, there is a constant drive toward greater automation. However, the operator remains a key element.
So I asked myself: why not create a simple system that alerts the operator rather than removing them from the control process?
When machines become overly complex and autonomous, safety devices are often perceived as obstacles to productivity and may end up being bypassed or removed.
That is why the concept behind the SSP600 was to develop a solution that is simple, cost-effective, and easy to use, even on existing machines.
Who contributed to the development of the project?
First and foremost, the company ownership, which believed in the idea from the very beginning.
Then our Technical Manager and Marketing Department contributed to defining and developing the project. Once the concept was formalized, the support of all the other departments became essential, from Purchasing and Production to on-site testing activities.
It was truly a team effort.
What is the SSP600 and how does it work?
The SSP600 redefines the traditional concept of a stabilization plate by transforming a passive component into an active safety device.
It is an IoT (Internet of Things) solution designed to help prevent overturning incidents involving construction equipment, particularly concrete pumps.
The system incorporates load sensors with wireless transmission technology, allowing real-time monitoring of machine stability.
Unlike manufacturer-integrated systems, it is a stand-alone and universal solution designed for retrofitting existing machines without structural modifications and without affecting certifications or CE documentation.
How does it improve safety?
The main objective is to reduce and prevent so-called “near misses.”
The system acts during the early stages of a potentially critical situation, when the operator still has time to take corrective action.
During pumping operations, for example, it is often impossible to visually monitor every stabilization point. The SSP600 provides real-time alerts if an outrigger loses contact with the ground, allowing intervention before the machine reaches a critical stability threshold.
Why did RM® decide to invest in this project?
Although we are an SME, we firmly believe that safety and sustainability must be pursued through concrete actions.
We know that the market is not always ready to invest in these areas, as safety is still often perceived as a cost rather than a value.
We chose to actively contribute to driving change.
What impact can a solution like this have on the industry?
People often confuse what is essential with what is ordinary.
The SSP600 was intentionally designed to be simple and effective, but the real challenge is not building the product itself. The challenge is helping people understand that it is not just another component, but a practical tool that genuinely helps protect operators in the field.
For us, investing in safety means creating a tangible positive impact on the lives of the people who work on construction sites.
Who is the SSP600 designed for?
The SSP600 is primarily intended for companies operating fleets of machines that are more than four years old or equipped with simpler configurations that often lack advanced safety systems from the factory.
One of its key strengths is the ability to use the kit on multiple machines. The pad is interchangeable and can be transferred from one machine to another without the need to equip every single unit.
This makes it an ideal solution for large fleets that are not operated at full capacity simultaneously.
What are the main barriers to adopting technologies like this today?
The real challenge is not regulatory; it is cultural.
When a device is perceived as an obligation, it becomes a cost. Change happens when safety becomes a conscious choice.
Investing in safety should be an expression of a company’s values, not simply compliance with a regulation.
Cosa deve cambiare perché queste soluzioni diventino uno standard?
I like to quote a passage from Vasco Rossi‘s song “Cambiamenti” (“Changes”), which says:
‘Cambiare il mondo è quasi impossibile
Si può cambiare solo se stessi
Sembra poco ma se ci riuscissi
Faresti la rivoluzione’.
“Changing the world is almost impossible
You can only change yourself
It may seem like little, but if you succeed
You would start a revolution.”
I believe these words perfectly capture the concept: real change always begins with ourselves.
The safety revolution starts with a different daily mindset, greater awareness of our responsibilities, and the willingness to continuously improve.
How did you experience winning the ICTA 2026 Innovation Award at the latest GIC exhibition in Piacenza?
What impressed me the most was seeing how everyone in the company embraced this achievement with genuine pride and made it their own.
They kept repeating a phrase that may sound cliché, but I can assure you it was the most spontaneous and common reaction:
“We won. We did a great job!“
That “we” perfectly captures the sense of belonging and pride that, every day, represents what is perhaps our greatest strength.
Do you already have other innovative projects in development?
We try to find inspiration every day. It’s not easy… maybe the next one will come from another piadina!
But it is our duty to keep observing, thinking, and improving.
A final thought or piece of advice?
My advice is to have the courage to dare and to embrace change — not only when it comes to products or projects, but in life in general.
Very often, through simple everyday situations — going back to the piadina story — we realize that something could be done differently. Yet we stop ourselves because we see too many obstacles or assume it will be too difficult.
So my advice is simple: Believe in it. Give it a try.
From an idea born during a lunch break to a national recognition such as the ICTA 2026 award, the journey of the SSP600 demonstrates how innovation can emerge from the simplest observations.
The project was developed with the goal of making a concrete contribution to safety on construction sites, transforming a traditional component into a tool capable of supporting operators in critical situations.
